Two small earthquakes struck Baja California today, according to preliminary reports from the U.S. Geological Survey. The fist hit at 4:43 a.m. with a magnitude of 3.3 and had its epicenter 18 miles southeast of Calexico, Calif., and 103 miles east of Tijuana, according to the USGS. The second, which had a magnitude of 3.0, occurred at 4:55 a.m., its epicenter 20 miles southeast of Calexico and 105 miles east of Tijuana. The two temblors followed a magnitude-4.5 earthquake that hit at 7:49 p.m. Thursday, its epicenter about a mile south of San Bernardino. That quake was followed by one that struck in the same area at 8:47 p.m. with a magnitude of 3.3.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Arctic air extended its grip Wednesday with below-zero temperatures stretching from Montana to northern New England and frost nipping the Gulf Coast. A few ski areas in Vermont and northern Minnesota closed for the day because of the cold — 38 below zero at International Falls, with the wind chill during the night estimated at 50 below. etc.. etc.. The cold wave also bulged into the Northeast, abruptly dropping temperatures in New York state into the single digits and below zero — after Tuesday's readings in the 30s, the National Weather Service said. SALEM, Ala. (AP) - Three tornadoes barreled through east central Alabama, destroying one church and damaging another. Ten homes and a school were also torn up by the twisters. The National Weather Service says the system has snapped or ripped hundreds of trees from the ground and flipped an 18-wheeler. LUBBOCK, Texas - Central Texas cattle raiser Gerry Shudde remembers Texas' drought of record in the 1950s when his family's ranch sometimes got a couple of 4-inch rainfalls a year. But the drought ongoing now is far different. "This is just cut off completely," the 74-year-old rancher said. "In a lot of ways, it's worse." Across the nation's No. 2 agricultural state, drought conditions are evaporating stock tanks, keeping many crop farmers from planting, forcing cattle producers to cull their herds, and dropping water levels in state lakes. etc.. etc.. The FBI have ruled out Pakistani Taliban militant leader Baituallah Mehsud's claim that he was responsible for an attack on a U.S. immigration centre which left 14 people dead. More than 40 people were taken hostage at the American Civic Association in Binghamton, New York state yesterday by a man with a high-powered rifle who later committed suicide. Mehsud told Reuters that his group was responsible, saying: 'I accept responsibility. They were my men. I gave them orders in reaction to U.S. drone attacks.' Keep promise to leave Iraq

Our country has just entered its seventh year of the invasion and occupation of Iraq, an invasion that was sold to us by the Bush Administration on the basis of lies and misrepresentations. We were told that Saddam Hussein's regime possessed weapons of mass destruction, which it didn't. Former President Bush and former Vice President Cheney implied that Iraq was involved in the attack on the World Trade Center which it wasn't. None of the terrorists were Iraqis; most were from Saudi Arabia. What have our illegal and immoral actions cost the American and Iraqi people so far? U.S. casualties: 4,259 deaths and 31,131 wounded in action. Cost of the war in funds already allocated: $656 billion. Estimated number of Iraqis displaced since 2003: 5 million, nearly 20 percent of the population. Average hours of electricity per day in Iraq: 13.3. Documented Iraqi civilian deaths: between 91,121 and 99,500. (The Nation, April 6.) etc.. and the news story continues...

Mexican drug war spilling into US

PHOENIX, Arizona (AFP) — Homes are being invaded by gunmen, people raped and tortured, and bodies dumped in the Arizona desert as violence from the Mexican drug wars spills into the American Southwest. Illegal immigration and drug smuggling have always been issues in this border state, but warring Mexican cartels are carrying violence to levels that have shocked law enforcement and government officials. "It's definitely being ramped up beyond anything we've ever seen before," Arizona state Senator Jonathan Paton told AFP. "The violence in terms of kidnapping, home invasions, and assassinations here has increased. We see the violence flowing from Mexico into the US and we're seeing we have to take different steps." etc.. and the news story continues...

Washington - Tinkering with Earth's climate to chill runaway global warming - a radical idea once dismissed out of hand - is being discussed by the White House as a potential emergency option, the president's new science adviser said last week.  That's because global warming is happening so rapidly, said John Holdren in his first interview since being confirmed last month. etc.. etc.. etc.. Holdren and many experts believe that warming of a few degrees more would lead to disastrous drought conditions and food shortages in some regions, rising seas and more powerful coastal storms in others.  "We're talking about all these issues in the White House," Holdren said. etc.. and the news story continues...

LAND OF FEWER OPPORTUNITIES

Employers used to snap up refugees. Not anymore.

Most mornings, a long line of refugees waits outside an office at Catholic Charities on Syracuse's North Side.  They come looking, hoping, for job leads.  They hear advice and fill out application after application after application.  Recently, six refugees - five with bachelor's degrees - shared three computers, filling out forms for food service and housekeeping jobs at a local hospital.  But the 1,000 refugees who moved here last year are finding there just aren't many jobs.  Half, at least can't find work.  etc.. and the news story continues...

A tornado that traveled through Blount and St. Clair counties Sunday damaged more than a dozen buildings, destroyed four buildings, and displaced 95,000 chickens by destroying seven chicken houses, a National Weather Service storm survey team confirmed today. The EF -2 tornado brought 122 mph winds through the Highland Lake community. The twister, the strongest one confirmed to have hit central Alabama Sunday, traveled a path more than 6 and a half miles long and 300 yards wide. etc.. and the news story continues...
